Castries, Saint Lucia – Saint Lucia has officially welcomed Her Excellency Nicole Y.C. Su as the new Taiwanese Ambassador, marking the first time a woman has held this diplomatic position in the country. Ambassador Su succeeds Peter Chia-Yen Chen, whose tenure concluded in December 2024.
Upon her arrival, Ambassador Su engaged in a series of diplomatic meetings to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Saint Lucia and Taiwan. She paid a courtesy visit to Minister for External Affairs, International Trade, Civil Aviation, and Diaspora Affairs, Alva Baptiste, where both parties discussed avenues to enhance cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to mutual development.
In a subsequent meeting with Minister for the Public Service, Labour, and Gender Affairs, Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte, Ambassador Su was briefed on key ministerial initiatives. Minister Albert-Poyotte expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s substantial support, particularly in gender equality and information and communication technology (ICT) projects. She highlighted the establishment of Saint Lucia’s Minimum and Equal Wages Commission and the enactment of the progressive 2022 Domestic Violence Bill as significant milestones achieved with Taiwanese assistance.
Ambassador Su, who brings extensive diplomatic experience from previous postings in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Geneva, the Netherlands, and other European assignments, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaborative efforts. She noted the impactful ICT projects and anticipated the inauguration of new centers aimed at furthering community development. Ambassador Su emphasized the importance of continued partnership to advance gender equality, women’s empowerment, and labor initiatives.
Saint Lucia and Taiwan have maintained diplomatic relations since 1984, with a brief hiatus between 1997 and 2007. The appointment of Ambassador Su signifies a continued commitment to strengthening the ties between the two nations, focusing on shared values and cooperative progress.
