Chastanet Praises Taiwan as an 'Incredible Partner'

Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet has commended Taiwan for its long-standing support of Saint Lucia, describing the country as an “incredible partner” in national development. His remarks came as he welcomed Taiwan’s newest ambassador to Saint Lucia, Her Excellency Nicole Su, who has succeeded Ambassador Peter Chen.

“Taiwan has been an incredible partner in our nation’s development, investing in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and agriculture,” Chastanet stated in a Facebook post, acknowledging Taiwan’s significant contributions to the island. He emphasized that Taiwan’s support has played a crucial role in advancing Saint Lucia’s economic and social landscape, fostering opportunities for growth and stability.

He reassured Ambassador Su that she has strong allies in Saint Lucia who deeply appreciate Taiwan’s steadfast support. “We wish you great success, meaningful partnerships, and a fulfilling tenure in Saint Lucia,” said the United Workers Party (UWP) leader and former Prime Minister. Chastanet expressed his optimism that Ambassador Su’s leadership will further strengthen diplomatic relations between the two nations, leading to more collaborations and beneficial projects.

Saint Lucia has a history of shifting diplomatic ties between mainland China and Taiwan. The country first established diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1984, switched to China in 1997, and reverted to Taiwan in 2007. Since then, Taiwan has remained a key development partner. Chastanet noted that despite past changes, Taiwan’s commitment to supporting Saint Lucia has remained unwavering, with numerous initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for citizens.

Over the years, Taiwan has provided extensive financial and technical assistance to Saint Lucia, particularly in education, agriculture, and infrastructure development. The nation has funded numerous scholarships for Saint Lucian students, enabling them to study in Taiwan and acquire skills essential for the island’s workforce. Additionally, Taiwan has supported local farmers by introducing modern agricultural techniques to increase productivity and reduce reliance on imported food. Investments in infrastructure, including road development and energy projects, have also contributed to enhancing the island’s sustainability.

In November 2023, the Government of Saint Lucia received a $5.09 million grant from Taiwan to support strategic development projects aimed at enhancing capacity, strengthening climate resilience, and driving economic growth. This funding is expected to further bolster the nation’s ability to tackle climate change, develop sustainable industries, and create job opportunities for its people.

Chastanet’s remarks reaffirm the strong ties between Saint Lucia and Taiwan, underscoring Taiwan’s ongoing role in shaping the nation’s future. With continued collaboration, both nations stand to benefit from an enduring and mutually beneficial partnership that prioritizes progress and prosperity.
